Invasive Ants in Calabasas

- Argentine Ants

An invasive species of ants from South America has taken over most of California creating one of three supercolonies; two are in Europe and Asia, the third, you guessed it, is in California – lucky us!
Argentine Ant

Argentine ants are the most problematic of ant species in Calabasas.

Argentine ants have displaced many of our own native ants causing some of our wildlife, such as the Coast Horned lizard, to be placed on the “threatened” species list. These ants are fighters. Argentine ants use war tactics to ambush and attack our native ants. Do-it-yourself treatment methods do not work with this ant! Most ant species have just one queen but Argentine ants have several queens. If a colony feels threatened, it sends away one of its queens to start another colony. The result is an even bigger infestation. Your Hearts Pest Management service professionals are experts at identifying different ant species and treating accordingly.

Landscape Pest Control in Calabasas

Hibiscus flower and whitefly

Hibiscus trees often become infested with whiteflies.

Leaf with aphids and whiteflies

Aphids and whiteflies damage leaves of trees and shrubs.

Aphids are one of the most common and annoying landscape pest. They use their long slender mouthparts to pierce and suck out the fluids from the tender most part of your plants, usually the leaves, leaving (no pun intended) the leaves discolored. Plus, the honeydew aphids emit attracts ants. In exchange for protection from predators, aphids allow the ants to “farm” them, herding them into areas where they can be protected. Treating aphids equals less ants!

Practicing IPM for the Environment

Hearts Pest Management can treat most landscape pests with organic methods. We also practice IPM (Integrated Pest Management) to minimize damage to the environment from overuse of chemicals.

Spider Control in Calabasas

Black and Brown Widow Spiders

Brown and Black Widow Females – Note the spiky, cream-colored egg sac of the Brown Widow.

There are small little jumping spiders, fast-moving wolf spiders, beautiful orb-weaver spiders, and not-so-itsy-bitsy black and brown widow spiders that inhabit Calabasas. Most spiders are harmless but the two spiders of medical importance are the notorious black and brown widow spiders. The mouthparts of Daddy Long-legs can’t even penetrate human skin and they usually disappear within a day or two. The Orb-weavers create beautiful, intricate webs outdoors and are actually beneficial for the landscape by eating garden pests.

Black and Brown Widows

It’s the black and brown widow spiders that are sneaky and hide in dark corners – under patio furniture and on children’s outdoor play equipment, not to mention BBQ’s.

Their webs are messy, Halloween-looking webs that you see in corners of windows, garages, closets, etc. Black widows have a red hourglass on their abdomen while brown widows have an orange one. Brown widow egg sacs are spiky and cream color which makes them easily identifiable. Spiders such as the black and brown widow have to be eliminated on contact and their egg sacs destroyed. If you have a lot of spiders, it’s because you also have a lot of insects – a spider’s food source. Hearts will eliminate spiders and egg sacs, treat for both spiders and insects and remove any accessible webs around the perimeter of your home.

Pantry Pests

Drugstore beetle

The Drugstore beetle is also known as the bread or biscuit beetle.

Drugstore beetles are quite common, especially in warmer climates. They were named so because Drugstore beetles originally fed on pharmaceutical drugs but now they feed on a variety of things. The beetles often enter the home via bulk items of food such as birdseed and dry pet food. It feeds on dry plants such as herbs, spices, grains, flour, leather, books, and much more. One customer had an infestation in her laundry room; the beetles were in the cabinets where she kept her folded laundry! Cleaning cupboards regularly and vacuuming crevices in food cabinets will keep these pests at bay, however, if you have an infestation, Hearts Pest Management can treat for a variety of pantry-type pests.

Pest Prevention

Your service professional may provide the following suggestions to keep pests from coming indoors: Trimming back branches from trees touching the roof; keeping plants about 12 inches from away from the home; caulking any cracks in stucco or the foundation, etc.

Trees touching a home allows easy access for rats.

And, when it comes to rodents, should you ever have them in your house, we provide inspections for Calabasas residents, free-of-charge. Hearts performs trapping and remediation, clean-up and exclusions. Hearts Pest Management treats for a variety of pests including rats and mice, gophers, squirrels, wasps, and many more. Our philosophy is that all animals, insects, and arachnids have their place and are an integral part of the environment.

Hearts provides rodent trapping, exclusions and attic clean-outs.

On the other hand, once they start coming indoors and infest our homes, creating potential harm to our families and pets, it's only then that they become "pests." We do our best to practice Integrated Pest Management to minimize damage to the environment and treat only where and when necessary, often with organic solutions.
